TEAM HISTORY:
Since its inception in 1976, the program has and will continue to be run in a very professional manner. Funded through the Student Association, the Great Danes Ice Hockey team is one of the most reputable organizations on campus.
The team has put itself into a high-ranking position in the East Division and is an annual contender for a spot in the National Tournament. The team plays between 20 and 30 games per season and practices two to three times a week. The home ice for the Great Danes is the Albany County Hockey Facility, located only 10 minutes from campus. For all away games the team travels together via coach bus.
All team members are required to be full-time students and in good academic standing with the University. The Great Danes season begins with a general interest meeting. After the meeting, the team conducts an open try-out.
The team begins its season in early September and runs through early March. All practices and games are suspended for major holidays and school closings. The team consists of approximately 28 players, three coaches, and a General Manager. This season we are anxious to see how our new freshmen and transfers come to fill in the holes in what is already an experienced line-up. Most players have played either at the varsity high school or junior level on various teams around the Northeast.
